The accelerating pace of global infrastructure development presents a significant environmental challenge. Construction activities and the extended lifecycle of infrastructure assets are substantial contributors to GHG emissions, thereby exacerbating anthropogenic climate change. A paradigm shift is essential; proactive, evidence-based, and effective policy frameworks are urgently required to guide the construction industry toward enhanced sustainability. This lecture presents specific, actionable strategies for achieving this transformation from the construction operations, such as green procurement strategies, application of simulation and LCA approach to evaluate the emissions from construction activities, contracting-based policy to incentivize and penalize the contractors towards sustainability performance. The economic rationale is integrated with emissions reduction to yield significant cost savings, enhance resource efficiency, and foster the development of more resilient infrastructure systems in the pursuit of sustainability.

Dr. Charinee Limsawasd is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Chulalongkorn University and completed her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at Florida International University, USA. Her expertise spans Sustainable Construction, Optimization and Modelling, Green Procurement and Bidding, as well as Infrastructure and Asset Management. Dr. Limsawasd’s research focuses on integrating sustainability into construction practices to promote environmental responsibility and efficiency. In addition to her research, Dr. Limsawasd has consistently published in prestigious academic journals and serves as a reviewer for numerous esteemed international journals and conferences. Her work significantly advances sustainable practices in construction management, aligning with global efforts to address environmental challenges in infrastructure development.
